commerce towers grand re-opening event
a roaring 20s themed soiree

Commerce Towers , downtown Houston's newly renovated luxury high rise, celebrated the past and embraced the future with a roaring 20s themed soiree on Friday, February 29, 2008. This was a truly a Time of Celebration where guest dressed up in their flapper and Al Capone outfits, sipped on 1920's classic martinis, jiggyed the night away to Maria Williams big band music, and munched on an incredible array of heavy hors d' oeuvres and desserts from Houston's finest establishments.

The Party
– As the event kicked off at 6 PM, guests walked down the red carpet where they were greeted by Neal Hamil models wearing one of a kind 1920s flapper costumes from Fancy Flappers.com with their hair perfectly coiffed in classic 20s hair dos by Janelle Flatt from Norris of Houston . Chocolate covered strawberries provided by Jim Benton and champagne were immediately offered to guests as they made their way up to the 23 rd floor where the ultimate party began. Four different themed rooms were set up, each with different activities, food and spirits.

The Speakeasy room was the most popular where the Maria Williams Band played big band numbers from Sinatra, Fitzgerald and Dorsey all night, while guests tried out their swing moves on the dance floor.

Highlight of the evening included a spectacular dance performance by Houston Swing Dance Society . Guest enjoyed spinach and artichoke fomaggio, crispy beer battered onion rings and shrimp cocktail from Timpano Restaurant .

Entering a hallway lit with color light balls took guests to the largest unit of all, the Cotton Club where guests were faced with a giant ice sculpture where Idol Vodka was poured down the ice cold tunnel and landed on each martini glass. On one side of the wall, the 20s gangster movie The Cotton Club was projected, while a delectable carved roast beef station with cheese and garlic polenta from Jim Benton catering was served in the other. An array of sinful and scrumptious sweets were served at the dessert station.

A state-of-the-art studio was set up in the Capone room by Catch the Moment to provide guests with a fun and memorable way to capture forever this fun-filled night. They pose for a digital photo, which were immediately printed and inserted into a frame for guests to take home as memorable keepsakes. Guest also enjoyed crab cakes from Saga restaurant, and Samosa Keema Empanadas and Vegetable Biryani with Raita from Yatra Brasserie . Guests washed down their global bites with Roaring champagne punch by Boisset Family Estates .

For those that wanted to slip outside for some fresh air, a Liberated cigar lounge accompanied by Remy Martin cognac was served on the balcony terrace of the Gatsby room, overlooking the breathtaking downtown skyline. Droubi Bros Mediterranean Grill offered a build-your-own gyro sandwich station with pita and humus and kabobs. The bar in this room served red and white wines from Boisset Family Estates, DeLoach vineyards, and Charles de Fere.

beyond skin deep
Dr. Connie Khanh Nguyen

With perfect, pore less alabasque skin, Dr. Connie Khanh Nguyen , serves as “faces” of the treatments her patients peddle. ‘We live in a society that places great value on image and appearance, and I go to great lengths to present a consistent image,” said Dr. Nguyen, a slim and pretty blonde haired dermatologist in the Heights with pretty Asian features that gives her an exotic can't-seem-to-guess-what-nationality-she-is look . Just like Sally in the in the famous restaurant scene from the When Harry Met Sally movie, patients point to the Fendi-and-Jimmy Choos-clad Dr. Nguyen and say: “I'll have what she's had.”

Dermatology was not always a glamorous field. “Historically, they were geeks,” said Dr. Ellen Marmur, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center . But over the past decade, the field has changed drastically, due largely to breakthrough products such as Botox and longer lasting inject able fillers. Patients seeking for a dermatologist these days are really looking for a beauty way of life, a lifestyle necessity, like going to a hair salon or a spa. The consumer nowadays is smarter and more educated in skin care, and demand for safe, noninvasive anti-aging procedures versus the last resort of going under the knife.

Being attractive helps, but as the field becomes more lucrative, landing a residency in dermatology has become so difficult that Dr. Marmur of Mt. Sinai was quoted to say that “it's harder to become a dermatologist than an astronaut.” N.Y.U. School of Medicine has lately received 450 applicants for its approximately eight spots per year. Why is dermatology such a popular and competitive field ? Its cush and flexible schedule are unbeatable, since dermatologic emergencies, unlike heart attacks or baby deliveries, rarely occur at 2 a.m. Not only Dr. Nguyen got into the field, she also won " Dermatology student of the year ", an award given out annually by the dermatology department at the University of Texas medical school. It was given to one student chosen by the faculty professors, with criteria as being excellent in all aspects of dermatology. Not bad for a Vietnamese girl who came to the US when she was 13 and spoke very little English. Her focus on the positive aspects of life and her bubbly personality have taken her a long way in overcoming life's obstacles, for which she gives her mother all the credits.

She considers herself a Houstonian, although she moved away for college, came back to Houston to finish her residency, then moved away to San Francisco to start her professional career for a few years. She recently moved back to Houston to be near her family. When asked how single life in SF was compared to single life here in Houston , Connie replied “That is really hard to say. There are more singles in San Francisco than Houston . But there is more of a chance to meet other singles in Houston . I have found folks in Houston are friendlier and easier to approach to strike up a friendship.” Lucky for single men in Houston , sounds like Connie is here to stay. Dr. Connie Khanh Nguyen can be reached at Carl B Roundtree and Associates by calling 713/ 868.5861.

What advice do you have to women out there to do to take care of their own skin?

Listen to advice from a board certified dermatologist. There are many folks, doctors and non-doctors, who claim to be skin care specialists but might not have the proper training to take care of one's skin. Therefore, it is essential that women look at a care giver's credentials before seeking and following advice. Unless the title says board certified dermatologists, the care givers are not dermatologists.

What is the common mistake you see a lot of women do to their skin or their beauty routine?

Skip out sunscreen in the morning. Even with darker skin tones, one can be affected by the sun in many ways that can lead to wrinkles, melasma, freckles and aging of the skin.

Do you feel that being a woman in this field is a positive or negative thing?

For me, it is a definite positive attribute. Many times, female patients tell me they feel more comfortable to disrobe and show me lesions and rashes in areas that they feel awkward showing to my male colleagues. Many female patients love to talk about cosmetic concerns and I, being a woman, love to discuss this with my patients because some of the products, issues that patients have, I can personally identify with.

Do you feel that some men are intimidated by your professional success?

Most men I deal with professionally are no strangers to professional females, so I have not found that they are intimidated by me.

What qualities do you value in a man?

Humor is probably the most important value and the next is humility. A successful man without ostentatious arrogance is an extremely sexy man.

What is (are) the most popular procedure(s) at your clinic?

I do quite a bit of surgery to diagnose and treat skin cancers. Cosmetically, Botox and fillers injection, along with chemical peels, are the most popular procedures.

What is the latest break through in dermatology?

Medically, it is the treatment of some of the chronic diseases at molecular levels to help life long suffering patients. Aesthetically, the concept of treating a portion of the skin by laser at a time, technique used by the Fraxel machine is an incredible idea to rejuvenate the skin without causing too much down time for the patients.

What are your future plans?

1. To come up with innovative products to help patients all over with their dermatological needs. 2. Having a flexible lifestyle and still being a good doctor due to the non-urgency nature of the specialty 3. Dealing with beauty related issues with my patients.

My family: loud

My passion:   music

My favorite possession: ABBA poster

I'm thinking about: pho (Vietnamese noodle soup)

I am most proud of: being able to speak Spanish, Vietnamese and English.

What keeps me awake at night: my neighbors!

If I could be totally wild, I would: a female DJ with tattoos and bald head.

Right now I'm reading: "eat, pray and love" by Elizabeth Gilber, a gift from a dear friend.

The nickname I wish I had: Chiquita (little girl in Spanish, also a song by ABBA)

My favorite body part: can't make public!

My best friend says I am: multidimensional

I still can't get the hang of: Salsa

I wish I'd known :  how to be very diplomatic at all time.

I'd like to meet (a famous person - dead or alive): Anderson Cooper from CNN

The worst idea I've ever had: take my sunscreen bottle through security.

Something most people don't know about me:  I played violin.

galveston arts center

Galveston Arts Center is pleased to present three exhibitions exploring the recurring themes of repetition and nature in a variety of mixed-media works of art. An opening reception will be hosted during ArtWalk on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 9 pm . A gallery talk with curator Clint Willour and the artists will be held for GAC members beginning at 5 pm. The exhibitions will remain on view through May 18, 2008. GAC exhibitions are free and open to the public .

Using a variety of materials including book pages, vellum, thread, old photographs and found objects , Houston-based artist Lisa Qualls explores issues of ethnicity and heritage in her multi-media pieces. Growing up in Baton Rouge , the artist was familiar with the fierce sense of pride inherent in those around her who were of Italian, French, African or Spanish heritage. “I was curious about ethnicity and how all these groups blended together,” states Qualls. Focusing on Houston 's black community during the late 1800s and early 1900s , the artist has titled her project Breaking Ground , referencing that period of rapid growth and change that laid the foundation for the future of the community. Qualls received a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1988. She was a recent recipient of an Individual Artists Grant Award funded by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and was an artist in residence at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

All exhibitions are free and open to the public. GAC is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm, and closed on Monday . soaking up the california fun
by: mimi dinh

My most recent trip, a quick weekend jaunt to Southern California, was an ideal dual-purpose business and pleasure trip. That is, my husband went for business—a medical convention—and I tagged along purely for pleasure.

Although I have visited so many cities in California so many times, I always manage to find new things to do and discover in the Sunshine State. We started our weekend in San Diego , where  we spent our nights at The Sofia Hotel on West Broadway, right in the heart of all the action in the historic but trendy Gaslamp District . The Sofia building itself has a long local history as it dates back to 1927, but its heritage doesn't hinder its status as a hip, modern boutique hotel that is certainly posh but not pretentious.

While my husband attended his conference during the day, I took a short twenty-minute drive to La Jolla to take in the picturesque coastal scenery—and to meet up with a girlfriend for lunch. We decided on Jack's La Jolla as it's the hottest new place in town to eat and hang out and has recently been voted both “ Best New Restaurant in San Diego ” and one of the ten best new restaurants in the country. Jack's is actually a collection of three restaurants and five lounges under one roof. The décor is sleek and modern and features fireplaces, fountains, and an open atrium with an airy, expansive feel.

Toni DiSalvo , one of California's best chefs and the former chef de cuisine at New York 's world famous Jean-Georges , is at the helm at Jack's, so we knew we were in for a treat.  We also knew we had a lot of catching up to do, so we ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio and settled in for awhile. We chose the upper-level Ocean Room for its panoramic view from the vast glass window panels. First, we ordered the classic Caesar and the endive, pear and candied walnut salads, and then we opted for the penne, sweet sausage, and jalapeno pasta and the Kobe beef hamburger with a side of crispy onions fried lightly to perfection.

After our incredible meal, we walked along the beach enjoying the gorgeous weather, the beautiful beach, the good company, and—of course—ice cream. All the while, I kept remarking how the weather there was absolutely beyond perfection. It's a wonder anyone ever gets any work done in San Diego. If Houston's weather was like this all the time, people would be so much less productive—we'd be playing hooky all the time!

That night, my husband and I went to Café Sevilla in the Gaslamp District , an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant with a happening bar where you can order tapas and sip the best sangria around while you groove to the sounds of the Gypsy Kings playing in the background. Downstairs, Café Sevilla's hot dance club features live flamenco guitar and tango dance performances with dinner, followed by exotic club music with an international flair later in the night. We put our name on the list for a table in the main dining room, but since we were hungry, we ordered some tapas while waiting at the bar.

Soon we were noshing Sevilla fried calamari, crab cakes, empanada Barcelona, and a platter of a variety of cheeses. Sangria was topping it all off quite nicely, and we ended up having such a good time eating at the bar and people watching that we decided to finish our dinner there, too. So, we ordered their house specialty, Paella Valenciana, and shrimp brochetta to share and were so stuffed afterward that we skipped dessert. The atmosphere that night was incredible, and we left feeling like we had spent the night in Seville, Spain.

The next day, we drove up to Los Angeles and met up with our good friends, who are true foodies. For lunch, they took us to Pizzeria Mozza , the hot spot of L.A., where two of America's best chefs, Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali , along with Joe Bastianich (son of acclaimed chef Lidia), have collaborated on a menu that includes an impressive variety of authentic antipasti, insalate, small plates, panini, and pizzas—not to mention homemade biscotti and several flavors of gelato for dessert.

Mozza has got to be the hardest reservation to get in L.A. right now, but because we went for lunch and had made reservations far in advance, we were seated right away.  Our table was the best seat in the house as it overlooked the wood-burning oven and allowed us a view of all the action. Ordering was a snap since our friends have been there so often they didn't even need to look at a menu to know what to order—and, between the four of us, I think we had just about everything on Mozza's menu.  We chose a Santo Valentin Pinot Bianco from the impressive and extensive selection of Italian wines, and it proved the perfect pairing with our meal. And, while everything we ate was sensational, the pizza was truly out of this world—Mozza's crust was a perfectly balanced, chewy-yet-crispy, blistered and puffy work of art. These pies reminded us of pizza we have eaten in Rome and Naples, where we used to think we had eaten the best pizza in the world. But, that was before we had Mozza's pizza. Now we know better.

After lunch, we went to visit the Eames House . I'm a big mid-century modern architecture fan, so Charles Eames is of course a favorite architect of mine. Charles and his wife Ray's now-historic home is situated on a hill overlooking the ocean, and both home and environs are truly breathtaking. I found it amazing to see how this house, with its geometric glass and Mondrian-esque color block façade, was so contemporary for the 50s—and yet could easily be livable today.

Continuing on to another fabulous home, later that evening, our friends cooked us a gourmet dinner of Dungeness crabs sautéed with garlic and oyster sauce, fresh clams swimming in white wine sauce, and shrimp fried wontons.  We finished our repas with chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Southern California truly laid out the welcome mat for us—and gave us more than ample reason to go back.

Life in Downtown Houston's high-rises just got a little more luxurious and exclusive. With recent additions to the renovated and rehabilitated landmark Commerce Building , the new Commerce Towers unveils an unparalleled lifestyle in the heart of Houston 's most desirable urban residential district. New Downtown Developments - With the second phase of urban renaissance underway in Houston , there has never been a better time to live downtown. The first phase of downtown development laid a sound infra-structure to make this new downtown more ‘live-able' than ever. Discovery Green Park , a recreational area opening April 2008, will feature lush gardens and promenades, and facilities to hold community festivals and performances. The Houston Pavilions , scheduled to open in the fall of 2008, will transform four downtown blocks into a distinguished hub for business, retail and entertainment. Commerce Towers offers residents a bird's eye view of Downtown Houston's urban face-lift, which has included the renovation of Main Street Square , Bayou Place , and Minute Maid Park .

Living “Green” - The Houston Downtown Management District's recently launched Vertical Gardens Matching Grant Initiative is intended to support landscaping on building walls, parking garages and sidewalks in downtown; improving not only the overall look, but also air quality and insulation. While the Vertical Gardens project serves as a stepping stone, several buildings in downtown are taking their own initiative to lessen environmental impact. Hines Interests is also planning to add green space to the roof of their new office building which can be seen from Commerce Towers . Commerce Towers is the only high-rise in Houston with its own Nicklaus design putting green on its rooftop pool terrace, which cuts down energy costs by absorbing sunlight that would otherwise heat the building directly.

A green roof isn't the only isn't the only eco-friendly element of Commerce Towers as its convenient downtown location provides residents with greener lifestyle options as well. Urban architects argue that high density populations create the need for greener and more efficient public services and mass transit systems. In addition to luxury onsite amenities and close proximity to major city landmarks, businesses, entertainment venues and restaurants, residents of Commerce Towers also enjoy easy access to the METRO rail and downtown tunnel. Commerce Towers is also walking distance from office buildings, the Theatre District, Minute Maid Park , and the Toyota Center . It's steps away from a light rail ride to the Medical Center , Museum District and Reliant Stadium.

About Commerce Towers - Commerce Towers offers more than 50 unique floor plans from $400,000 to more than $2 million -- ranging in size from 1,395 to more than 3,800 square feet and up to 33,000 square feet for penthouses. Commerce Tower 's residences are crafted with hardwood floors, granite countertops, high-end stainless steel appliances, double vanities and showers, Jacuzzi tubs, and luxurious fixtures and finishes throughout. Condominiums can also be designed and tailor-built with Penthouse residences ranging from one to three stories, including private rooftop gardens with sweeping views of downtown Houston .

Commerce Towers ' redesign incorporates two private residential lobbies, a fully-equipped fitness center, a private party facility with fully equipped catering kitchen for meetings or entertaining, a media room and conference room inside. Outside on the rooftop, residents can enjoy a heated swimming pool, jogging/walking track, and a putting green. The Nicklaus-design putting green, complete with sand trap, is capable of hosting a miniature 18-hole golf tournament. The Nicklaus putting green raises the standard of luxury, high-rise living.

With amenities such as 24-hour concierge and full valet services, porter service, weekly car wash service, and bi-weekly dry cleaning service, Commerce Towers offers the ease of luxury hotel living at home. The Commerce Towers valet staff will bring up groceries, packages and business materials. The concierge can hire butlers, maids, caterers and more to meet residents' every need.

Celebrating Re-Grand Opening - Designed by legendary Houston architect, Jesse H. Jones , the Commerce Building has been a prominent component of Houston 's downtown skyline since 1928. Today, the rehabbed and renovated Commerce Towers offers an elegant alternative to downtown high-rise living. In keeping with the building's historic beginnings, a “Roaring 20's”-themed soiree will mark the grand re-opening of Commerce Towers in late February. The invitation-only bash will call for flapper or Al Capone attire, and its exclusive list of attendees will celebrate big band music from the Maria Williams band, classic martinis, and a cigar and cognac lounge.

As Houston continues to redefine today's sophisticated urban lifestyle, Commerce Towers stands out as downtown's choice luxury residential address. Marketed by Tarantino Properties and a project of Premiere Living, the Commerce Towers is located at 914 Main Street . For more information, visit www.CommerceTowers.com .

environment & fashion create harmony in new summer collection

Just above the smog of downtown Houston , a rainbow appears bringing environmental harmony to this Bayou city. Not of the traditional Skittles fashion, this rainbow is alternating shades of light green, blue, pink, ivory, black and white, all the colors for Green by Adeline's Spring/Summer 2008 collection . Aspiring treasure hunters and leprechauns alike can find the end of the rainbow (and the pot of “green”), in a local shop that marries fashion and environment by way of both ready-to-wear and custom couture collections.

Located near the Galleria, Green by Adeline is a chic, eco-friendly boutique that will celebrate six months in business with a sexy, silky, versatile and hip new Summer collection.

Creating eye-candy for fashionistas, environmentalists and any combination there-of, local designer Adeline Sung brings fashion down to Earth with bamboo fabric to create the “coolest” spring/summer 2008 collection. Bamboo, a notably breathable fabric, is consistently a winner in the battle against humidity and the rising thermometer.

Adeline's new line stays continually fresh and free from embarrassing odor, all while being eco-friendly and fashion-conscious. How is that for multi-tasking? “My favorite pieces are a top vest and jacket. They can be easily accessorized to go from day to evening, casual to dressy,” explains Adeline about her new collection.

The “living green” mentality, already embraced by many across the country is so much more than a fading consumer trend. It is a revolutionary movement to conserve the Earth, the non-renewable provider of life, beauty and diversity. Approached with caution by both fashion-lovers and novices, Green by Adeline is ready to relieve your anxiety about making the environmental fashion leap. Being eco-friendly does not confine you to a wardrobe inspired by the latest in potato sacks, we promise! With a family background in fashion, Adeline is native to Shanghai , studied in Paris and Milan and is inspired by designer Valentino, brings her exceptional designs to life in Houston 's first 100% eco-friendly boutique.

A role-model and teacher to other entrepreneurs embracing the “green” lifestyle, Green by Adeline has hosted many other in-house events, providing advice and insight for a more efficient and effective business environment to different business organizations. Embraced with excitement by the media, this cutting-edge local designer has graced the pages of Tribeza, Luxury Houston, Bay Area Houston, Envy, 002, Houston Chronicle, Gloss, Health and Fitness, Houston Business Journal, RU Magazine, World Journal, Total Body and will be featured in the May issue of Skirt! Adeline, our city's head cheerleader for Team Earth, is helping to educate the general public to see, contribute and love the “big picture.”

So, with dull drapes and itchy potato sacks ruled out, what IS waiting for you at the end of the rainbow? Simply stylish, luxurious fashion with a conscience. Houston say “hello” to Green by Adeline , a little piece of Utopia conveniently located on of Utopia conveniently located on Richmond – 5136 Richmond , between Sage and Loop 610. 10 things you can do to help save the earth

Empty water bottles in a trash can.

1. Pay attention to how you use water . Got a leaky toilet ? You might be wasting 200 gallons of water a day [Source: EPA ]. Try drinking tap water instead of bottled water , so you aren't wasting all that packaging as well. Wash your clothes in cold water when you can.

2. Leave your car at home . If you can stay off the road just two days a week, you'll reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds per year [Source: EPA ]. Combine your errands -- hit the post office, grocery store and shoe repair place in one trip. It will save you gas and time.

3. Walk or ride your bike to work, school and anywhere you can. You can reduce greenhouse gases while burning some calories and improving your health. If you can't walk or bike, use mass transit or carpool. Every car not on the road makes a difference.

4 . Recycle. You can help reduce pollution just by putting that soda can in a different bin. If you're trying to choose between two products, pick the one with the least packaging. If an office building of 7,000 workers recycled all of its office paper waste for a year, it would be the equivalent of taking almost 400 cars off the road [Source: EPA ].

5. Compost. Think about how much trash you make in a year. Reducing the amount of solid waste you produce in a year means taking up less space in landfills , so your tax dollars can work somewhere else. Plus, compost makes a great natural fertilizer. Composting is easier than you think.

6. Change your light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) last 10 times longer than a standard bulb and use at least two-thirds less energy. If you're shopping for new appliances or even home electronics, look for ENERGY STAR products, which have met EPA and U.S. Department of Energy guidelines for energy efficiency. In 2006, the ENERGY STAR program saved energy equivalent to taking 25 million cars off the road and saved Americans $14 billion in utility costs [Source: ENERGY STAR ].

7. Make your home more energy efficient (and save money). Clean your air filters so your system doesn't have to work overtime. Get a programmable thermostat so you aren't wasting energy when you aren't home. When you go to bed, reduce the thermostat setting.

8. Maintain your car. Under inflated tires decrease fuel economy by up to three percent and lead to increased pollution and higher greenhouse gas emissions

Underinflated tires decrease your fuel economy and lead to increased pollution.

9. Drive smarter. Slow down -- driving 60 miles per hour instead of 70 mph on the highway will save you up 4 miles per gallon.

10. Turn off lights when you're not in the room and unplug appliances when you're not using them. It only takes a second to be environmentally conscious.

green business services

It's reasonable to assume most entrepreneurs start businesses to see the green--the big bucks. But as more business owners consider their impact on the environment, entrepreneurs are seeing the importance of going green, from working with recycled materials and eco-friendly suppliers to using green packaging and PR .

According to a recent study for the Grocery Manufacturers Association , 85 percent of U.S. consumer business companies have active sustainability initiatives. "The demand [for green business services] is there, but the supply is minimal," says Chris Manning, executive director at The Green Chamber , a national organization focused on environmental stewardship. "It's a young industry, [so there's] tremendous opportunity." Manning, 38, founded Manning & Associates Financial Services five years ago because he saw the need for green investing. This year, the Houston-based business projects sales of $545,000.

spanking children can lead to problems later in life

Parents who teach "tough love" by disciplining their children with spankings could be making them more likely to have sexual problems as teenagers and adults, a leading researcher said.

Professor Murray Straus , of the University of New Hampshire , found that children who are spanked or experience other corporal punishment have a raised risk as teenagers and adults to verbally or physically coerce a partner into having sex.

"It's more evidence that parents should not spank if the wellbeing of their children is at stake," he said in an interview.

Straus analyzed the results of the International Dating Violence Study, a survey of more than 14,000 university students at 68 universities in 32 countries. The students were asked if they had been spanked or hit frequently before age 12 and if they had coerced a sexual partner in the previous 12 months.

Men who had experienced corporal punishment were four times more likely to physically coerce a partner into having sex, than those who had not experienced a lot of corporal punishment.

Physical coercion includes holding someone down or hitting them. Women who had experienced corporal punishment were also more likely to coerce sex from a partner than those who had not been spanked.

"People generalize that the use of coercion, physical coercion, is okay. They learn that from people they love and respect - their parents," said Straus, who presented the findings at a summit of the American Psychological Association .

Both men and women who had experienced corporal punishment as children were less than 10 percent more likely than those who had not been spanked to verbally coerce sex from a partner.

Straus said studies have shown that corporal punishment leads to low self control and self esteem, as well as aggressiveness, antisocial personalities and the understanding that violence is okay which may lead to sexual coercion.

He added that there are alternative ways to discipline children that work better and do not have side effects.

“Thank you for a spectacular party for their Open House. Everything was first-class, well-organized and great fun. The activities were perfect from room to room, the dancers were fabulous and a terrific crowd-pleaser as was the "Catch the Moment" photo memento. The residents and guests who were there are still raving about it today.”

quote of the month

“The tenets of public relations remain constant regardless the media.  It's about dialogue and discussion rather than merely promotion.  That's how you build credibility and why PR is an important complement to any advertising program.”
